Resource efficient design for hotels

QO hotel in Amsterdam aims to embrace a sustainable, circular approach and generate a positive impact for both people and planet. The hotel uses natural and existing resources that are created nearby as much as possible - almost a third of the concrete used in the construction of the QO came from Amsterdam’s iconic old Shell building. And instead of disposable items, the hotel prioritises using long-lasting and reusable items, trying to reuse, repurpose or recycle before discarding. The outside of the hotel is made up of a series of fully responsive thermal panels that adapt and react to the climate outside the hotel to control the temperature inside. The hotel has an underground energy storage system utilising a thermal aquifer. A grey water system ensures that all water that comes from the showers and sinks is then used again to flush the toilets.
