Bio-based Connections is a collaboration of 11 companies, governments and institutions, with the aim of realising the bio-based economy in the wider Amsterdam region. One success already achieved is the cultivation of Miscanthus (elephant grass) around Schiphol Airport. The grass has several uses including air quality improvement, CO2 capture, noise reduction and as a goose repellent (key for planes in vicinity). Cellulose present in the stems and leaves can be harvested and used to produce bioplastics.
