Renovating unused space for resource efficient urban farming

An abandoned steel mill in New Jersey, USA, will become the world’s largest vertical farm following investment by AeroFarms. The farm will produce over 900.000kgs of leafy greens (e.g. rucola and kale) per year using an aeroponics system, where crops are grown in vertical stacks of plant beds without sunlight, soil, water or fertilisers. The crops use an alternative growing medium (a nutrient-rich mist) and are under specialist LED lights.

  • Water Impact: 95% less water
  • Financial Impact: 20-33% return on investment
